Nutritionists agree that a diet rich in whole foods, with lots of fruits and vegetables, fish and whole grains, dairy, legumes and nuts is the best for human consumption. Processed foods and added sugar are generally a bad idea although those foods that meet standards of the required food nutrient may be good for human health.

Experts say consuming a healthy diet throughout the life-course helps to prevent malnutrition in all its forms as well as a range of non-communicable diseases. The most important thing you can do to ensure optimal health is to eat fresh food and avoid consuming processed food full of sugar.

This is the wise thinking of experts majoring in nutrition aspects of food and agricultural scientists whose take is for farmers to grow fresh foods with all food nutrients as they discussed the topic in a public dialogue organized by development partners Agri Profocus, Hivos and the government of Netherlands in an effort to sensitize stakeholders about consuming the right food diet.

Recommended crops
For the case of Uganda he advises farmers to grow crops such as cassava and maize which provide carbohydrates to the body. Soy beans and ordinary bean varieties with the recent varieties having iron and zinc components besides providing proteins to the body.

Others are sweet potatoes, including orange flesh varieties which are rich in Vitamin A, potatoes, rice and oil plants such as groundnuts, simsim and sunflower which provide cholesterol-free oil rich in Vitamin A to the body.

He urges farmers to stick to local vegetables such as nakati, amaranth, cabbages and pumpkin as they have a high iron content and cow pea leaves, among others, which are rich in vitamins, iron and zinc as well as fibre-rich foods.

Other food nutrients important to human body is Omega 3 acids which are extremely important for the proper functioning of the human body. For example, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid derived from animals and fish including insects such as grasshopper and white ants makes up about 10–20 per cent of the total fat content in the brain.

Scientists contend that a low intake of omega-3 is associated with a lower IQ, depression, mental disorders, heart disease and many other diseases.

Porridge
Agroking Uganda limited produces porridge from milled flour which is a mixture of beans, soybeans mixed with maize flour, orange fleshed sweet potato and milk. This is instant porridge which he says comprise all food values needed for the body. All the produce is milled with the husks to avoid taking away some of the food nutrients. Removing the husks is only done at the client’s request.

Soy millet flour
Agroking Uganda limited says “millet flour which is mixed with soy flour and maize flour for making instant porridge”. The team is also processing soy flour which is sold to people baking confectionary products. This is added to ingredients such as wheat flour, cassava flour and orange fleshed sweet potato flour.

Soy meat
Soy meat is done by using the extrusion process, soy flour is mixed with water, sodium chloride, and other spiced ingredients. The mixture passes under pressure through a cooker extruder. The product expands as it leaves the extruder and forms a textured vegetable protein product.

Working with farmers
Agroking Uganda limited is working with 330 lead farmers with members totaling 1,000 in kikumbe district like kyangwali mainly those growing beans and maize. Agroking Uganda limited provides the farmers with quality seed and farmers pay back upon harvest.
