Integrate nutrients
Working with a network of 200 agricultural and nutrition research scientists across the globe, using a process known as bio-fortification to integrate higher levels of micro-nutrients: iron, zinc, and Vitamin A, directly into key staple foods in poor communities.
The crop into which the nutrients have been introduced are described as bio-fortified. A poor household can avoid malnutrition by simply growing and feeding on bio-fortified crops because they have most of the micro-nutrients that would be obtained if the household had access to vegetables, fruits and the other foods that make a balanced diet.

Encouragement.

training the farmers to use the flour in making cakes and chapatti. “The flour may also be used to make porridge,” he added. “Anybody eating the cakes and pancakes or the chapatti gets the desired micro-nutrients, and will be a lot healthier. We encourage them to sell them as widely as possible.” the main objective for promoting bio-fortified food crops is to improve nutrition, especially among children and pregnant women.

Increased demand
“When they drink porridge made out of maize flour and bio-fortified bean flour and the bio-fortified potato flour they get Vitamin A, zinc, and iron. Because sweet potatoes are sweet, its flour makes the pancakes and chapattis a lot tastier,” To get potato flour, the farmer cuts the potatoes into chips, which are dried under the sun, and he or she can pound to make flour or take them to the milling machine, the way it is done with cassava flour.

Compare notes
The bio-fortified crops appear set not only to improve nutrition but also household incomes.
On display at the show were other crops such as pineapples, yams, maize and pumpkins, production of which is part of the food security effort.

What is food fortification?
Food fortification, according to the World Health Organization, is the practice of adding essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, Vitamin A, folic acid and iodine to staple foods, with the aim of improving their nutritional content. This, according to experts, is because most of these foods are excessively refined, and in the process, the natural nutrients are lost, leaving the product fine, tasty, but with no nutritional value.

Source of minerals and vitamins
food fortification is crucial because many diets lack the adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals. These vitamins and minerals in the diet, also known as micro-nutrients, though required in small amounts, are essential for an individual’s health and development.

because many people do not have access to adequate quantities of fruits, vegetables and dairy products-- foods that are naturally rich in micro-nutrients, fortification offers a cheaper alternative to providing these nutrients for the body. “Maize and wheat flour, cooking oil and salt are commonly consumed foods in Uganda. So, when these micro-nutrients are added to the flour before they are packaged, the consumer will benefit from the nutrients without incurring an extra cost,” that eating fortified foods is also one way of fighting malnutrition in the country, especially among young children.

For improved nutrition
encouragement of exhibition where farmers and farmers groups displayed sweet potatoes and beans they produce, products such as cakes and chapatis that are made out of sweet potato flour, as well as bananas and other food crops produced by organic farming methods will help reduce malnutrition in Uganda.
“Since we are marking World Food Day, we also encouraged them to display any other food crops from their farms,”

The bio-fortified sweet potatoes are enhanced with Vitamin A to boost nutritive value, while the beans are fused with zinc and iron and are especially recommended for pregnant women and children. pointed out that the production of these crops has been going on since 2012.
